The arts scene in Singapore has been nothing short of interesting this year, with small-scale art events like ArTITstry and Bras Basah.Bugis Arts Sprawl to bigger-scale ones like the Singapore Night Festival and the on-going Singapore Biennale dotting our arts precinct. Coming up next year is the island’s blockbuster annual art event, Singapore Art Week, the controversial M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (also check out our interview with festival director Sean Tobin) and the Palestinian Film Festival. To add on to the list, Aliwal Arts Centre has announced the return of its annual arts festival.
Happening on Jan 14, the festival will begin at 11am and go on throughout the night. There’ll be a showcase of visual and performance arts inspired by international street cultures and contemporary arts such as the No Regrets For Our Youth by DXXXXD, where you’ll see a curated “urban gym” that touches on today’s culture of being obsessed with body image; a hip-hop block party held at the center’s carpark; exciting music performances from the likes of Disco Hue, Forests and Poptart; and many other ecxiting all-day programs. You can also sign up for various workshops where you can learn to create music using turntables or pick up skills from local artists who’ll accept a good conversation or alcohol as “payment”.
