We previously reported that one of our favorite events, i Light Marina Bay, is returning in March to light up the waterfront (and our Instagram feeds) for the fifth year, but what makes it more interesting and fitting is the presence of this festival village, The Fantastical World of eco•me, which is also an inaugural community engagement project by local arts and creative non-profit enterprise The Rice Company Ltd, to encourage sustainable living through the festival’s various arts and lifestyle activites.
Highlights include an urban farming showcase that will feature well-known green advocates in Singapore such as OCBC Urban Garden, UGrow Gardens and Greenology, who will teach you how to convert food waste into fertilizers and growing greens with a vertical vegetable growing system. There’ll also be an area where you can learn how to recycle waste products into useful or decorative items, taught by local label Blink.a.Bottle (they create beautiful table lamps using old bottles and fairy lights). But if you’re more keen on activities that are less hands-on, you can also whip out your phones to snap Ocean Pavilion, a massive installation designed by color blind English artist Luke Jerram and created by students and community members using 20,000 recycle plastic bottles. Or head over to shop for handmade crafts and eco-products from vendors like Izzy, selling coffee tables or shelves from unwanted guitars and ukuleles and Zhai Eco Collection with their original designs made from natural fibers. While you’re there, enjoy music performances from the mentees of Noise Singapore and a site-specific theater performance that uses four light installations choreographed by the student alumni of performing arts training center, 10 Square @ Orchard Central.
