The Singapore Writers Festival is back this year with over 250 events across 10 days. The theme of this year’s program is “The Prospect of Beauty” and festival attendees are invited to discuss hard-hitting topics like the environment, economic progress, morality in literature and unrealistic projections of female beauty.
There are over 200 local and international writers in attendance, including big names like science fiction writer Raymond E. Feist, notorious feminist and social critic Naomi Wolf and literary stalwart Paul Theroux (who’s 1973 novel Saint Jack was banned in Singapore for 30 years). On the poetry front, we’re also excited about a visit from American poety Robert Pinsky and the poetry editor of the New Yorker, Irish poet Paul Muldoon, along with Singaporean poets like Cyril Wong. As a multi-lingual literary event, Singapore Writers Festival also features Malay, Chinese and Tamil writers including Malaysian author Evelyn Rose, Indian filmmaker Leena Manimekalai and Chinese writer Su Tong.
