The Laneway Festival 2013 in Singapore is slated for January 26, 2013 at Gardens By the Bay. Tickets are available via Sistic for $145, $160 and $350, excluding a $3 booking fee from Sistic.
The full-day event (noon-midnight) will feature the following acts, arranged in alphabetical order:
Alt-J
This indie pop group from the United Kingdom comprises former fine art students from Leeds University (Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, Tom Green and Gwill Sainsbury) who composed their Mercury-nominated first release An Awesome Wave while living in the same house. Their lead single “Tessellate” hit the British top 20. Expect tunes peppered with smart pop culture references to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.
Bat for Lashes
English singer songwriter Natasha Khan’s third album The Haunted Man follows her well-received debut release Fur & Gold and acclaimed second album Two Suns. The award-winning talent has taken home titles like the ASCAP Awards’ Vanguard Award, the UK Asian Music Awards’ Best Alternative Act and Ivor Novello Awards’ Best Contemporary Song (Daniel).
Cloud Nothings
An indie rock four-piece act from Cleveland, Ohio, this band has a new release produced by Steve Albini, Attack On Memory. Comprising lead singer and guitarist Baldi, drummer Jayson Gerycz, guitarist Joe Boyer and bassist TJ Duke, they also have two other releases Turning On and Cloud Nothings.
Divine Fits
This American rock outfit comprises Britt Daniel, Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks). Though the trio has other projects, their first release A Thing Called Divine Fits is a laudable collection of 11 electro and post punk tracks. Look out for their cover of Roland S. Howard’s goth standard, “Shivers”.
Gotye
Best known for his breakout tune “Somebody That I Used To Know”, which has reached number one in 18 different nations and has over 330 million YouTube views, this Belgian-Australian instrumentalist pumps out intelligent and heartfelt tunes. His newest album Making Mirrors was recommended by trusted media outlets such as NPR, The New York Times, Nylon Magazine, Pitchfork and The Guardian.
Japandroids
Canadian rock duo Japandroids is known for party hits like “The House That Heaven Built” from their album Celebration Rock (2012). Influenced by AC/DC, Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses, the successful pair have performed on shows like Last Call with Carson Daly, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and MTV Live.
Kimbra
This New Zealander sings melodic pop songs and is known for her collaboration with Goyte on hit single “Somebody That I Used To Know”. Her debut album Vows reached number 14 on the Billboard Chart and number five in Australia. The young talent has also won the Critics’ Choice Prize at the 2011 New Zealand Music Awards.
Kings of Convenience
Hailing from Norway, indie pop duo Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe’s first release Quiet Is The New Loud made waves in 2004 but they only released their next album Declaration Of Dependence in 2009. They’ve also collaborated with the likes of Fiest for songs like “Know How” and “The Build Up” as well as Cornelius for jams such as “Drop” and “Omstart”.
Nicolas Jaar
New York-based good-looker Nico’s husky voice brings an emotional quality to his brand of techo-house tunes (which he calls “blue-wave”). His album Space Is Only Noise was highly praised by Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Crack Mag, DJ Mag and Pitchfork. His track “Don’t Break My Love” also garnered him a Best New Music award from Pitchfork in 2011.
Of Monsters and Men
Enjoying great success after their first album My Head Is An Animal was released, this folksy Icelandic indie pop six-piece group led by singers Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson, is already a hit in the United Kingdom and the United States. They won the 2013 European Border Breakers Awards and have performed at the Osheaga Festival in Montreal and Lollapalooza in Chicago. In addition, they’ve toured in several European countries like Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
Polica
Fronted by singer Channy Leaneagh, soulful Minnesota group Polica pumps out tracks like “Lay Your Cards Out” (featuring Mike Noyce) from their debut album Give You the Ghost. They’ve also been featured on television shows Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Real Estate
Jersey boys singer-guitarist Martin Courtney, guitarist Matt Mondanile, bassist Alex Bleeker and drummer Jackson Pollis have played everywhere from Coachella in California to the Primavera Festival in Barcelona. Their two albums Real Estate and Days have been highly rated by Pitchfork.
Tame Impala
This Perth-based psychedelic rock group lead by Kevin Parker, has just released their second album Lonerism, following on from their debut album, Innerspeaker (2010). Highly rated by NME, Pitchfork and The Guardian, and hitting the United States Top 40, the fresh release has an uncommon dreamy quality.
Yeasayer
American psychedelic pop band comprising Chris Keating, Anand Wilder and Ira Wolf Tuton have a lauded 2010 album under their belt, Odd Blood (2010). And their recent release Fragrant World provides more of the same dystopian melodies. Their songs have gained great commercial success, having been featured on popular television shows such as 90210, America’s Next Top Model and The Good Wife.
