Mega music event Music Matters Live is back for the fifth time on May 20-23, with over 70 bands from over 20 countries playing at various venues around Clarke Quay. And if that sounds like too many shows, here are two consolations: 1. entry is free to all of them (though you do have to pay for your drinks), and 2. we’ve rounded up the five most exciting ones you shouldn’t miss.
1. Lightcraft
Made up of five friends, this Jakarta-based alternative rock indie band’s anthem-like tunes make for easy listening. They’re also no stranger to the local music scene, having performed at Baybeats several times.
Catch them at: Beer Market (May 20, 10:30pm), Fountain Stage (May 21, 6:15pm), China One (May 21, 8pm) and Crazy Elephant (May 23, 7:30pm)
B.P Valenzuela
She might only be 19 but she’s already making waves in Philippines, where she’s from. The young electro-pop singer-songwriter just released her full-length album Neon Hour earlier this year and on top of singing and writing, this multi-talented musician also produces her own tracks.
Catch her at: Timbre Music Academy (May 20, 10:50pm), Barber Shop (May 21, 8:50pm) and Beer Market (8:00pm)
Sphaeras
You’ve probably seen them at Baybeats and despite their reverb- and delay-laden sound, they are adamant about not being labeled as a post rock band. The four-man instrumental outfit also recently dropped their highly-anticipated debut album Moirai.
Catch them at: Beer Market (May 20, 8pm and May 21, 11:40pm)
Froya
This eclectic singer-songwriter from Malaysia puts out quirky, upbeat music, and her first single “Fries in Cream” not only got picked up by radio stations across Malaysia, it also got picked up by a Los Angeles radio station.
Catch her at: China One (May 21, 9pm), McGettigan’s (May 23, 9:40pm), Paulaner (May 23, 10:50pm)
Dru Chen
Another hot local act to watch out for is this singer-songwriter. This Melbourne-born, Singapore based singer marries old school soul and funk with modern sounds and soulful vocals, making for some pretty catchy music.
Catch him at: China One Baize (May 20, 11:30pm and May 22, 12:30am), Beer Market (May 22, 7:15pm)
