After a year’s hiatus, the permanent galleries of the National Museum is opening again on Sep 19 and this time, things are a bit more colorful and fun. Nostalgia continues to reign supreme as Singapore’s history is represented through colorful graphic posters of film, theater and music from the ’70s and ’80s, vintage toys and trinkets, and even a collection of vintage cameras, such as a Super 8 film camera—hipsters and design buffs, take note.
Besides chronicaling life in Singapore for the last 100 years (Level Two), there’s a headier walk through Singapore’s roots from the 13th century to present day (Level One). Be prepared to spend at least an hour or two combing through the exhibits on Level One and Two, which offer multi-sensorial experiences like interactive installations, a zoetrope, short film clips and even scent stations.
Admission to the permanent galleries is free for all Singaporeans and permanent residents. Don’t miss the Opening Weekend Carnival on Sep 19-20, featuring food stalls, special guided tours and a recital of Teochew folk poems. More information here.
