Apps like Tinder and sites like OK Cupid are supposed to make dating a little more convenient and a little less confrontational—you take a look at profiles and then judge them based on a couple of photos and some background info before even meeting them, swiping left or right (which really does take out the magic of dating). But if you’re single this year and want to kick it old school, head over to Hush, Singapore’s first silent teabar, happening at Asian fusion restaurant Epiphyte Singapore on Feb 13.
The idea was conceptualized by Athena Ong and her four friends back in 2013 to help break down the barriers between the deaf and the hearing. It’s pretty interesting: besides learning about and tasting tea, you’ll also go through a sharing and reflective session, which also includes some tea art-making, led by the “tearistas” from the Singapore Deaf Community. You’ll get to take in the peaceful ambience as you soak in your own thoughts. Later, you’ll be paired with another participant at the session, whom you’ll get to know of more after both of you have sat in silence (and perhaps pick up some a couple of phrases in sign language), because according to them, “…if [this person] understands your silence, [this person] will understand your words.” Throughout the session, you’ll get to try five of the 12 different types of original tea selection blended in-house and an exclusive Valentine’s Day dessert from the restaurant (all we know at this point is that it’s a flowery cake). Two lucky participants will also go home with a Hush In A Box; an all-you-need kit to have your very own mini Hush Experience at home.
