“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages tied up with strings, these are a few of my favorite things”—if you sang that out loud in your head, you will surely be excited about The Sound of Music returning to The MasterCard Theatres this year from Nov 7.
One of the most highly-acclaimed productions out of the home of West End’s famous musical theater, London Palladium, the dazzling and upbeat show was last staged in Singapore three years ago, and sold out to a total of 70,000 people. For the uninitiated, the musical is set in Austria in 1938, and follows the true story of Maria Rainer, the light-hearted and jolly governess who embarks on a personal mission to bring joy back into the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by reintroducing them to the world of music, with songs like “The Sound of Music”, “My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss”, and more.
While meant as a light-hearted musical, the story slowly unfolds as Maria slowly falls in love with the children (and eventually their widowed father), and culminates in the whole lot fleeing Austria through the mountains to escape the rising tensions prior to the outbreak of World War II. The original Broadway production has already earned six Tony awards including Best Musical, while the 1965 film musical with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Oscars, including Best Picture.
Once again, the show will see a group of 18 young Singaporeans between the age of six to 14 to fill the roles of the six younger von Trapp children—Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl. Auditions will be taking place from May 26-28 at The MasterCard Theatres itself, however a form must be completed online.
