The History of Java

Prepare for effigy-burning installations in this one. Referencing Sir Stamford Raffles’ time in Indonesia that led to a two-volume tome of Java’s history, local artist Jimmy Ong reimagines Raffles’ documented adventures between 1781-1826 in Java for this exhibition. The large-scale three-meter drawings depict scenes from the establishment of Islam to the arrival of the British forces.

Opening reception on Jan 15, 7pm, with an artist performance at 8pm. There’s also a casual hangout (“nongkrong”) session with the artist on Jan 18, 3pm.
