#10minswith is a monthly series featuring leaders, creatives and entrepreneurs who dare to chart their own path in Singapore and across the region.
Making it big in the entertainment industry is not easy, especially in a city like Hong Kong. No one knows it better than Hong Kong actress Sisley Choi. One would have assumed it would have been easy for the Miss Hong Kong 2013 first runner-up but according to Choi, it has been 10 years of hard work.
Her “bold, mighty and fearless” qualities are the reasons why Choi was picked as the new celebrity brand ambassador for BMF The Aesthetics People. The beauty and aesthetic centre credits her for being bold in her choice to play many different roles in her acting career, having the might to surmount the challenging conditions and gruelling hours on sets, and the fearless confidence to withstand the sensationalist environment of the industry.
We caught up with Choi when she was in town to promote BMF The Aesthetics People’s new Cristal Pro Sculpt System. The treatment takes fat freezing to the next level with homogeneous chilling, ultrasound precise targeting, quick cooling (up to -12 degrees Celsius) and advanced applicators with optimal suctions. It reportedly can remove up to 20 percent of unwanted fat, with visible results in fat loss in just three weeks.
Choi shares her thoughts on the treatment, the pursuit of beauty and well-being, and the people who have made an impact on her life and career.
Tell us your secret to looking good.
For me to have a so-called good body, exercising and dieting are obviously very important. I regularly go to the gym and work out, and I also go biking and swimming. I try to eat healthily, like a high protein and low carb diet. But what’s important is that I would regularly go to BMF and get treatments done. Even though you guys might think that I’m already very skinny, but my thighs would be my concern. I think the fat that’s stored in my thighs are stubborn fat. You can’t get rid of it unless you get professional help.
What is your mantra on the pursuit of beauty and well-being for the modern woman?
Daring to accept and admit that we are all flawed. But I think those flaws are beautiful and can be worked on, like daring to try out new things and trying out new treatments in order to better oneself.
Based on your experiences and achievements, how do you think you embody the qualities of being “bold, mighty and fearless”?
Being bold would be leaving school right after I won first runner-up at the 2013 Miss Hong Kong pageant. [I was studying in Germany for university] so I was in my first year. I entered the Miss Hong Kong competition, and somehow I just stayed there. I never went back to Germany; all my stuff are still there in my friend’s basement!
To stay in this industry as long as I have till now is pretty mighty. During the past 10 years, there have been a lot of fun times, but there were a lot of hardships too. It’s a very cutthroat industry. So it’s mighty to not give up. Being fearless applies to my everyday life. I like to feel fearless no matter what I encounter, or at least I would like to feel that way.
What led you to try the Cristal Pro Sculpt System?
All the hash browns that I ate in high school took a toil on me! And mashed potatoes and pasta and all that stuff, the list goes on. I just wanted to see if I can achieve even a better body. It doesn’t take much convincing for me to try the treatment, because I see that BMF provides professional treatments. It’s really good because it doesn’t take a long time. Every time I do it, it takes about 45 minutes which is pretty fast. Also, there’s no downtime. Right after the treatment, I can just get back to work right away. And It’s very comfortable for me, I fall asleep every time.
Can you give us a little peek on what projects you are working on now?
I would love to tell you guys, but there’s a really exciting project coming up for me which I look forward to, but I can’t reveal just yet. All I hope is that you guys can wish me best of luck on the project and hope that I can do a great job and make you guys proud.
You have played many characters as an actress. Is there a role that you’ve always wanted to play but never had the chance?
I’ve played a doctor and policewoman in the past, but I want to do something more feminine. Actually, I would really love to work with kids, because to me, it’s very important to be sincere when being a good actor. I think kids have no difficulties being sincere, and I would love to experience that interaction with a kid.
Who are the three most influential people in your life, and why?
My mom, because her kindness really influenced me. She’s a very kind person, and I think I learned that from her. Being kind is very important. It’s one of the most important qualities a person should have.
My friends are also very important to me, because, as you guys know, I left home when I was 13 to study abroad, so friends were like my family, too. The third and last person would be myself because I spend a lot of time alone. Deep down, I’m actually very much an introvert. I watch a lot of movies and read books and stuff, and doing those things influence how I behave.
What are some life tips for women trying to make their mark in society?
This sounds simple but it’s not. Try to be clear about what you want. Learn to say no. Be accountable and be the boss of your own emotions. Because a lot of the time, we would just put aside our own emotions and try to make the people around us happy – and that would slowly eat you up. The sooner you learn to do that, the faster you will be happier, and no one can stop you.
