Leica introduced the SL System to great fanfare back in 2015, and has revolutionised photography and videography while setting new standards for image quality, manufacturing, and user experience.
The highly anticipated new model, Leica SL3, builds on the mirrorless full-frame system and continues to meet the rigorous demands and aspirations of professionals and enthusiasts alike. Here are nine things to know about the SL3.
1. At its heart is a BSI CMOS full-frame sensor with Triple Resolution Technology that captures raw files in DNG or JPEG format at 60, 36 or 18MP.
2. The SL3 has a dynamic range of 15 f-stops and an ISO range of 50 to 100,000, resulting in breathtakingly detailed images in any lighting condition.
3. It is housed in an all-metal body with leather accents.
4. It can detect objects with phase detection (PDAF), and detect contrast (Contrast Detection AF) technologies. With such intelligent subject recognition, performance is enhanced in dynamic shooting scenarios even in low-light conditions. 5. Its bayonet mount ensures compatibility with a wide range of exceptional lenses from the brand and its alliance partners, thanks to its L-Mount standard. This includes the legendary Leica M-Lenses, now optimised for the SL3’s sensor design.
6. The advanced EyeRes Viewfinder delivers imagery at up to 120 frames per second with a resolution of 5.76 million pixels. The tiltable three-inch touchscreen lets you compose high-resolution shots from a variety of angles.
7. It records videos in resolutions of up to 8K using efficient codes such as H.265 and ProRes. With a dedicated time code interface, the new Maestro-IV processor with L2 technology ensures impeccable colour rendering and noise performance.
8. User comfort, ergonomics, and intuitive operation have been significantly improved. Colour-coded icons differentiate between photo and video modes for effortless navigation and personalisation.
9. The SL3 has slots for CFExpress type B and UHS-II-SD memory cards, a USB-C port for data transmission and tethering, as well as HDMI 2.1 output for connecting external monitors and recording equipment, thereby providing a greater level of connectivity. The Leica FOTOS app also integrates seamlessly with the device using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and MIMO technology.
