The pop culture scene in Singapore has just gotten a little more exciting with Co Play, a first-of-its-kind creative habitat for local artists located at Plaza Singapura.
Serving as the space for pop art and culture development, Co Play is described as a “melting pot for artists and collectors to connect and interact” and to “inspire new creative journeys into the world of pop culture art”. It is set to inject much needed vibrancy into the local art scene.
What can visitors expect? Well, if you are fans of local creatives, here’s your chance to meet them in person. Co Play’s artist village features a rotating roster of local artists-in-residence with their very own open studio booths.
See the artists in their element, learn the stories behind them as well as their artworks, and discover their creative processes. Check out Eric Chew’s monster doodles, Jeremy Tanavit’s fierce/cute artwork, Lester Lim’s toy designs, Rex Lee’s dotted illustrations, Toby Tan’s “dumpling shop” and Yang’s whimsical sculptures (take note of their live art schedule here).
Get your hands on highly sought-after collectibles and exclusive merchandise, or request custom works and personalised pieces from the artists onsite. Besides artists-in-residence, there are also featured artists such as Angelina Lim (aka Ella) and Distort Monsters with their respective artworks on display and sale.
Co Play also aims to bring art to life through exploration and collaborations by being the enabling platform for new creative talents exploring the world of designer art toys, and for established artists to dive deeper into the world of Intellectual Property creation.
It has, for instance, partnered with artist Taketo Kobayashi to launch an initiative called Proto Toyz to create bespoke artworks and limited-edition collectibles for renowned local artists.
Hooray for the weekend
Looking for original Star Wars or Transformers toys? The on-site collectors’ bazaar is your playground. Here, collectors set up stalls in the space every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm to sell both pre-loved and mint vintage toys, designer figures and rare collectibles to visitors.
Beyond the bazaar, there will be workshops conducted by artists, ranging from illustration and painting to pottery, where visitors can look forward to letting their creative juices flow and producing their very own art pieces under the guidance of the artists including Rex Lee, Angelina Lim and Emily Moh.
Co Play is at 68 Orchard Road, #03-67/69 (beside Best Denki), Plaza Singapura, Singapore 238839.
