Since opening in 1995, Ikea Alexandra has been an iconic destination for families, couples and practically everyone in Singapore looking to upgrade their homes. But like a typical home after being “lived in” for 29 years, it needed an update. Cue 2021 where a $20 million refurbishment began to give customers an improved shopping experience.

After three years, the final touches have been added, and Ikea Alexandra is ready to officially welcome shoppers with a slew of upgraded amenities. Don’t miss the housewarming party on Aug 24 and 25 with fun-filled activities and special offers (case in point, the popular Poang low-back arm chair is going for $79 instead of the usual $159, a whopping 50 percent off!).

Here’s what customers can expect at the revamped Ikea Alexandra store.

1. Improved accessibility, implemented in partnership with SG Enable, the focal agency for disability and inclusion in Singapore. Through focus groups and surveys with persons with disabilities, feedback on accessibility was gathered and implemented during the store’s refurbishment. They include a gentler slope for easier access to the store from the bus stop, and wider aisles in many areas of the store. The checkout area now has a height-adjusted wheelchair accessible counter at the self-checkout area. A dedicated room setting has also been developed to showcase how homeowners can weave accessibility features seamlessly into homes with Ikea furnishing.

2. Carpark upgrades. The carpark has more parking lots for families, electric vehicles and people with disabilities, as well as a new pickup point for private hire cars.

3. Inspired layouts. Customers can explore the showroom anew, with changes to the layout and additional room sets. Dedicated sections draw attention to highlighted products to spark inspiration for your home. (Check out the Markethall where everything is below $5!)

4. More family-friendly features. Upgraded washrooms boast larger baby care areas in both male and female washrooms because the company believes fathers and mothers are equal parents and should have equal access to baby care rooms. The new dedicated baby care rooms offer amenities such as a room for nursing mothers, nappy changing areas, and hot water facilities. Older kids (aged four to nine years old) can play at Smaland, a magical forest that has been given a makeover. Muslim customers can use the upgraded male and female prayer rooms located in the basement.

5. Refreshed Ikea Swedish Restaurant. Ever popular with customers, the restaurant boasts a brighter look with vibrant colours and new furniture. It also has a space catered to young families with a microwave for heating up baby food, and utensils for young children for a more convenient dining experience.

6. New bakery. For the first time, Ikea Alexandra houses a bakery on the first floor offering donuts, muffins, croissants and more. If that’s not enough, check out the Swedish Bistro for $1 hot dogs, Nordic fruit water and soya ice cream, and the Swedish Food Market for Scandinavian specialties.
