The ilLido Group is well known for its Italian restaurants and bars the likes of Aura, Braci and SONS, but with the opening of Room for More, they’ve now ventured into whiskey lounge territory—and we’re glad they did.
They’ve taken over a massive space on the third floor of an old Dempsey building, the same one which houses Atout (formerly Au Petit Salut) on the ground level. The two venues, though managed by different owners, have a symbiotic relationship. After enjoying French bistro fare downstairs, guests can head on up for a nightcap or to lounge late into the evening with whiskey in hand. A selection of Atout’s food is available at Room for More too, in case you’re still feeling peckish.
At the whiskey lounge itself, you’ll find none of the usual stuffiness more often associated with gentlemanly, leather-couch filled lounges. Instead, there’s a good mix of fabric and leather seats in an assortment of colors, while marble and polished brass touches keep things classy yet casual. The spaciousness of the place also lends an air of freedom. There are outdoor terrace areas too, for when you need a breather accompanied with a lush, green view.
Room for More’s whiskey collection is not the most vast in town, but at 200 over labels to choose from (and growing), it is more than adequate to satiate any palate. If you already know your whiskeys from your whiskies, simply go ahead and order—you’ll find both common and rare casks and a wide range all displayed on shelves near the entrance.
For beginners, this place is just as accessible. Wait staff will hand you a tablet device to order from, which first asks you a few questions about your preferred flavor profile before giving you recommendations. If you prefer finding out more about the menu the old fashioned way, have a tete-a-tete with Bar Manager Riccardo Nardone, who is more than happy to share about the collection. And if your partners in crime for the night somehow don’t fancy whiskey by the dram, there are cocktails, wines and beers available too, along with other categories of spirits.
