The buzz: This new alfresco bar has taken shelter at the Tanglin Post Office alongside Swiss Bake. Despite being located along the quiet stretch of Orchard Road, 1128 has been bustling since opening last month—they’ve got an Absolut Vodka bar serving its first premium label Absolut Elyx which is exclusively available here through September 2012.
The décor: The industrial minimalist design showcases wooden tables, sleek metal chairs and bare concrete floors. Surrounded by tropical greenery, this is a great spot for winding down after a hectic workday.
The food: Sample signature bites such as crispy chicken skin ($10) and deep fried prawn paste chicken ($12) that goes well with beer. If you’re looking for something more substantial, pad your stomach with local favorites such as the seafood fried rice and mee goreng (both at $10).
The drinks: Offering only premium spirits and beers, you can have your Absolut Elyx vodka ($15 a glass; $220 per 750ml bottle) with cranberry, grapefruit or pineapple juices. Grimbergen beer (blonde, blanche and ambrée) goes for $10 per half pint. Also served here is the refreshingly crisp Perrier-Jouët champagne ($22 a glass; $99 per 750ml bottle).
The music: The selection of folk pop and jazz music from the likes of Adele and Michael Bublé blends perfectly with the laid-back classy vibe.
The crowd: Attracting mostly well-coiffed tai tais and mid- to senior-level management execs who want a post-work drink.
Why you’ll be back: The relaxed chic vibe and the discreet location are major pluses for those who want to chill out without having to slum it in other packed bars.
When the weather is good, eating outside can be a truly enjoyable dining experience. These joints with charming open air areas are just the place to dine on breezy evenings.
