Kuriya Penthouse to Sumiya: Quick-change artist

Restaurant renovation is no easy business. But RE&S Enterprises managed to turn high-end establishment Kuriya Penthouse in to retro Japanese grill and waterhole Sumiya in just two weeks (June 15-July 1).

And it’s worked well, the place is now packed. On the top of Orchard Central, Sumiya is a real casual joint: lots of fun. The eatery is outfitted with drums (which enthusiastic servers beat every time someone leaves), retro posters and overturned buckets used as chairs.

Everything’s really light hearted: The menu includes all-you-can-grab edamame ($6) and DIY cotton candy ($5). The drinks are cheap. (Asahi for $4.90!) And the view of Orchard Road is pretty fantastic. We’re really impressed with this quick-change artist.
