Menzo Butao and Tonkotsu King Four Seasons: Ramen 2.0

We figured that ramen had its day a couple of years ago, in 2011 (with the opening of cult favorite noodle joint Ippudo and the first branch of Tonkotsu King), but really, the trend never died. It just evolved. Gone are the plain pork-based soups. Noodles today are souped-with funky flavors. Think of it as Ramen 2.0.  

Just opened is the first outlet by Japanese ramen chain Menzo Butao at Marina Square’s new food wing. The spot offers ramen (from $12.90) with different pork soup bases such as Kuroo (black onion) and Akao (red chilli). There are also side dishes like fried gyoza ($5.90).

Then, there’s Tonkotsu King Four Seasons, the fourth and latest project by chef Keisuke Takeda at Bugis Village. This venture is a little more gimmicky than the last few efforts, offering bowls inspired by the seasons like Spring ($11.90), noodles enhanced with basil and parmesan cheese, or Summer ($13.90) topped with spicy minced pork. The space is really quite garish too (colorful Japanese-inspired murals cover all the walls). But if you’re in the area, it’s worth a shot for the novelty.
