Bubbly Brunch
Speakeasy (54 Blair Rd., 97579-5111) is bumping things up a notch from their usual Saturday hangover brunch and doing it with 12 different Champagnes ($110), including Jacquesson 734 Brut NV, Bollinger Brut NV and Ruinart Brut NV on April 16. After all, the quickest way to get over a hangover is drinking yourself through it.
New Openings
Martin No. 38 (38 Martin Rd.) is the latest food hub, with Kha, Graze’s second rendition and Provisions, a café and gourmet food store. At Provisions, we spotted an assortment of products including duck rillettes ($28.05), sardines in olive oil ($15.50), Gryphon tea (from $16.50) and Le Tourbillon crèmes de foie gras de canard in flavors like candied ginger and Sauternes or with truffles ($58.85). But what got us most excited was the selection of Graffeo coffee available, such as 1935 dark house blend, 75th anniversary golden blend, organic fair trade and teres grand cru ($18).
For those of you who aren’t over the whole Spanish food craze yet, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s another in the works. Sabio Tapas Bar & Restaurant (5 Duxton Hill, no phone number yet) is set to open by the end of the month in the Duxton Hill area. That’s thanks to Olivier Bendel, the man behind steak and fries bistro L’Entrecôte (36 Duxton Hill, 6238-5700).
We were more than a little sad when we realized Raw Kitchen Bar (276 Upper Bukit Rd.) would be closing. They’ve reincarnated as Kilo (2/F, 66 Kampong Bugis, 6467-3987), a Japanese-Italian eatery that we’re looking forward to checking out soon. Also new is Malacca Celup (115 East Coast Rd., no phone number yet), a satay hotpot restaurant which will be in business today.
Another addition to the Katong area is Latte e Miele (#B1-K125 Katong Shopping Centre, 865 Mountbatten Rd., 9093-2055), which officially opens tomorrow. This tidy little gelato store is actually the second offshoot of one of our favorites, previously known as Frigidarium (#01-40 Market Street Carpark, 146 Market St., 9653-3140). Expect to find flavors such as white chocolate and lavender, Marsala wine & raisin, salted butter caramel and yogurt.
In Search of Gold
We know we are. But we’re talking about the edible varietal. Yes, it’s white asparagus season. To find some, head down to Senso Ristorante & Bar (21 Club St., 6224-3534) where they’ve crafted dishes centered on this prized vegetable. Aside from cream of white asparagus and morel mushroom soup with truffle Easter bread ($22) and homemade ravioli stuffed with pecorino and white asparagus ($28), there’s also Australian grain-fed beef tenderloin on a bed of white asparagus ($42).
