Chocolate Overload
Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore (22 Orange Grove Rd., 6737-3644) is celebrating its big 4-0. Besides chocolate sculptures inspired by the novel Lost Horizon, there will be an afternoon tea chocolate buffet featuring 40 different chocolicious desserts through May 1 ($38).
New in the Hood
Following the launch of Cold Stone Creamery (#01-09/10 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd., 6238-9060), Orchard Central is really starting to liven up. Indulge your sweet tooth, without the guilt, at dessert spot cacao7 (#B2- 09 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd., 9185-1332) with their range of organic chocolates (from $2.50) and low-carb cheesecake ($7). Another spot to look out for is Mediterranean eatery Medzs (#B2-01/03 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd., 6238-9028) slated for an end-of-the-month opening.
Another fresh face in the Robertson Quay area is Stacked (#01-13 The Quayside, 60 Robertson Quay, 9677-8281). Get your mind out of the gutter folks. This one-week-old dim sum bar will be serving up the usual suspects, as well as more unusual bites such as pesto scallop wantons with balsamico dip and English Cumberland sausage wantons with mustard mayo.
Over in Chinatown, we spotted three-week-old Taratata Bistrot (35A Keong Saik Rd., 6221-4506). A quick glance at this French bistro’s menu revealed pan-seared foie gras ($26), ovenbaked pig trotters stuffed with morel mushrooms (also $26) and warm chocolate pudding with lavender ice cream ($18).
Go for Gold
Savor some white gold at Bontá Italian Restaurant & Bar (#01- 61 UE Square River Wing, 207 River Valley Rd., 6333-8875) which is serving up dishes such as white asparagus alla fornarina ($42)— white asparagus with fried egg, rosemary and black truffle—as well as homemade saffron-scented angel hair with tiger prawns, white asparagus and cherry tomato ($38). Head down quick before you miss the season.
