Beer Bulletin: the iBrew challenge is back and new beer offerings around town

Beer is an everyman drink—whether you fancy it with a hearty meal or a backyard BBQ. We’re rounding up the latest in beer news to satisfy those sudsy cravings.

For serious home brewers, The iBrew Challenge is a time for aspiring home brewers to vie for the top suds, while the rest of us support the craft by drinking. Tickets are now on sale: early birds can snag one for $50 bucks a pop, whereas on-site passes go for $60. There’s a free-flow of 20 craft beers from some of the world’s most respected craft breweries, as well as kegs of the home brewers’ creations

A beer garden has opened up on Prinsep Street adding to the foray of the shophouse strip (somewhat notoriously known for its karaokes and dive bars). Der Biergarten is an intimate live music venue that serves up Bavarian-inspired pub grub like roast pork knuckles and sausage platters, as well as a selection of comfort food like spud halves. Paulaner’s microbrews are tapped out, while bottled offerings include commercial names like Hoegaarden, Erdinger and even Tiger.

Bottle shop Brewers’ Craft rolls out some new craft bottled beers for those who like it a little stronger. Italian Birra Del Borgo’s Archeo Birra Etrusca is a three-way effort by Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione, Baladin’s Teo Musso and for added scientific flair, U.Penn’s Dr. Pat McGovern. The complex “ancient ale” has notes of raisins, hazelnuts and pomegranate for a fruity, tangy and yeasty beer at a whopping 9.2% abv. On the other hand, Japan’s Swan Lake B-IPA (7%) is a Belgian-IPA with spicy, citrusy aromas stemming from Belgian yeast and American hops.
