Somewhat gentrified hawker food institution Lau Pa Sat has launched a couple of new stalls in recent months. Ranging from healthy, organic food to hearty North Indian cuisine in air-conditioned comfort, here are some yummy dishes to try:
Bing Su (Stall 27)
Singapore’s soaring temperatures might not have topped 40°C yet, but it’s still a scorcher on most days. There’s no better time to cool down with a refreshing bowl of bingsu, the Korean version of our local ice kachang. Some best sellers from this stall include the Bibim Bingu, topped with a medley of fruits, red bean, Oreo cookies and whipped cream, and the Injeolmi Bingsu, a simple combination of shaved milk ice shavings, roasted almonds, soya powder and rice cakes. Prices range from $5.90 to $10.90.
Kang Lu Organic Food (Stall 18)
Using only soba noodles or brown rice in their dishes, this stall offers healthier options, with grilled chicken, fish and beef, that are priced from $5.50 to $7. Try the salmon fish or the saba grilled chicken, which are their most popular dishes.
Nuraishah Moncayo (Stall 56)
Those who can’t do without fried chicken may want to give this Indonesian street food stall a go. Their best-selling dishes include the ayam penyet set ($5.50) and the ayam bakar set ($5.50), and we’ve been told that they’re served with a special chili sauce unique to the stall. The stall also recommends the sup buntut, a beef broth that comes with a large portion of beef bone.
Urban Roti (Stall 96-103)
One of our favorite (air-conditioned) stalls has to be this London-based North Indian eatery. Serving a mix of authentic and fusion dishes such as briyanis, curries and tandoori items, Urban Roti also offers wide range of vegetarian options. Some of their specialties are the Chicken Tikka Two Way ($14.95), UR Dup Chicken Curry ($18) and the Rajasthani Stuffed Mushroom ($16), with spinach, cheese, nuts, celery and mint. There’s also a full bar that has a large selection of classic cocktails, spirits and beers from Italy and India.
Wang Ning Sheng (Stall 77)
Hit this vegetarian stall for a hearty and affordable breakfast—their bee hoon or stir-fried noodles comes with a choice of three sides for a reasonable $2.80. Other highlights include the curry mutton, which is made from brown beans, and vegetarian laksa.
