Hong Kong porridge institution Mui Kee officially opens in Singapore

Comfort food never looked this exciting. Hong Kong icon of all porridge icons Mui Kee is finally setting up shop, permanently, in Singapore—in a cozy little space at Shaw Centre. Previously, the eatery hailing from Mongkok had been operating out of a pop-up at Casa Verde for a grand total of eight months. Taking over what was formerly Caveau Bar, the new 50-seater restaurant will be Mui Kee’s first official brick-and-mortar here, and opens Mar 26.

Fans of the brand’s soothing, signature congee will be delighted to know that the same heirloom recipes and heritage cooking techniques will be present at the Singapore outlet too. Third-generation owner Choi Kok Tung will personally oversee the branch, operated by the Les Amis Group.

On the menu is an expanded list of congee options—on top of the regular offerings like Four Treasures Congee ($7.80) and Parrot Fish Belly Congee ($11.80), two new premium options have been added, including the indulgent Alaskan Crab Leg Congee ($22). Each bowl of Mui Kee porridge is prepared from scratch and lovingly tended to for five hours; the result is an aromatic and luxuriously creamy concoction sure to steal the hearts of every office lady.

In addition, the Singapore outlet will offer a full menu building on the Hong Kong stall’s dedicated offering of congee. Come March you’ll be able to pick up Fried Frittors ($4.50), Shredded Duck & Preserved Vegetable ($5.50), all-new claypot dishes like Frog Legs with Ginger & Spring Onions ($22), as well as Mui Kee’s equally legendary Plated Steam Rice Noodles (i.e. chee cheung fun, $4.50). For those with a sweet tooth, shaved ice desserts like Mango Pomelo ($6) and Yuan Yang ($5) will be available too.

It’s safe to say this was a culinary godsend nobody saw coming—and that folks working in town will be flocking in droves to what’s sure to be a new hot lunch spot. Maybe wait a week or two before heading down yourself.
