Hop aboard this new travel-inspired restaurant for storied drinks and eats

It’s back to the grind for most of us this New Year, and chances are you’re sorely missing your overseas adventures during the holiday season. Good news: There’s a new travel-inspired restaurant and bar in town, with dishes that are sure to evoke memories of trips past.

Shangri-La Hotel’s Origin Grill & Bar has recently opened its doors, and here’s why it’s all the buzz. Your culinary voyage begins once you step into the restaurant, designed to bring back the nostalgia and timeless glamour of luxury train travel. We’re talking table tops shaped like chess boards, hand-stitched leather chairs, and benches made of wood and burgundy leather. The bar even looks like a train ticketing box framed with silk velvet curtains! Over at the foyer, a stylish moving objet d’art resembles a train track in motion.

And that’s just the interior. Helming the kitchen is Sydney-born Chef Heidi Flanagan, who has worked for several luxury hotels, restaurants and wineries worldwide. Her international experience is reflected in her cooking philosophy—to bring people together and create unforgettable memories. Judging by the quality of the cuisine, we’d say she’s succeeded in doing just that.

Think fresh, authentic flavours with meticulously sourced ingredients from around the world. Seafood lovers can indulge in line-caught seafood from marine-certified coasts in New Zealand and the Philippines. For carnivores, a mouthwatering selection of beef awaits. Grass and grain-fed Angus and Wagyu cattle from Australia, Ireland and Japan to be exact! Wine connoisseurs are also spoilt for choice with over 45 grape varieties to pair with their cuts.

Of course, no meal is complete without a refreshing cocktail (or two). At Origin Bar, take your taste buds on a journey back in time through the local districts of Chinatown, Little India, Boat Quay, Orchard and Marina Bay. Bar manager Adam Bursik’s unique concoctions draw inspiration from the historical anecdotes and flavours of each neighbourhood.

We recommend trying the namesake cocktail Origin, a spicy gin-based mix with sugar cane honey, nutmeg, pepper, charred pineapple and lime husk wine. Another standout is Buona Vista—blending coffee, fig, distilled hazelnut, chocolate and Campari as an ode to journeys and settlements.

With so much to taste and experience at Origin Grill & Bar, it’s high time to head there for a meal around the world.
