Japanese restaurant Panko brings deep-fried skewers to Haji Lane

Tired of boring bentos and simple sushi? Fret not; joining the variety of Japanese dining concepts in Singapore is Kushikatsu, an Osaka-originated dish of deep-fried skewered meat and vegetables. The restaurant to thank is Panko, a part of Unlisted Collection, whose doors have opened on Haji Lane to introduce Singapore to the concept.

For anyone wondering, Kushikatsu differs from Yakitori in its cooking method and variety. While Yakitori is a term typically reserved for Japanese grilled meats on skewers, Kushikatsu skewers are breaded and deep-fried, and can range anywhere from pork to cheese to eggplant. At Panko, meat, seafood and vegetables are skewered on to bamboo sticks, coated in egg batter and dipped in fine panko (breadcrumbs). Once out of the fryer, the hot skewers can be eaten alone or with the restaurant’s specialty sauce.

The skewer experience is led by Bincho’s Chef Asai, together with head Chef Ishikawa who will assume residency at Panko. You can expect the same high standard of food—but at surprisingly affordable prices; Kushikatsu sticks start at $2. On top of that, the menu includes sushi, sashimi, don buri, noodles, and an extensive selection of cocktails, shochu, sake, Japanese whisky and craft beers to wash it all down. Panko promises a casual new dining experience with a cyber punk edge; frankly, we’re excited.

Panko is open 5:30pm-12mn daily at 4 Haji Lane
