Best restaurant in Singapore? Andre? Iggys? JAAN? Wrong! TripAdvisor, that trusty source of user-generated reviews, currently reckons the best spot in town (out of almost 7,000 that have been reviewed) is none other than Capricci. What’s that, you ask? Our thoughts exactly. We reviewed the place a few years back and gave it a modest three stars.
But user RazNe says: A great find in Singapore. A small unpretentious restaurant in Duxton Hill. We went there for St Valentine’s Day. Service was slow, but I am sure every restaurant would have faced this issue as they all scrammed to maximise the evening by having multiple seatings etc. Food was amazingly good and the staff were very apologetic and did explain the reason for the delay. We will definitely return as the food was very authentic and reasonably priced for Singapore.
The list is evidently somewhat self-perpetuating. Quite a number of the reviews come from people who say they went there after seeing it on TripAdvisor. And the site has always suffered from being gamed by venues that market their TripAdvisor presence heavily (although to be clear there’s no evidence that’s what’s going on here). And of course it skews toward places popular with people on, you know, a Trip. But still—in an age where opinions have been outsourced from the experts to the masses, it’s telling that a restaurant can come from nowhere to top the list.
