The very first Michelin Guide Singapore in 2016 was an illustrious affair, with two of our hawkers being the first street food offerings in the world to receive the coveted Michelin stars. The second edition held in June last year was lacklustre in comparison, seeing as no further hawker stalls were awarded stars too. We suspect the Michelin inspectors were just lazy.
So this year, as Michelin prepares to roll out its third guide, forgive us if we are a little apprehensive as to how events will pan out. But we’ll give them the benefit of doubt until results are out on Jul 25, at a glitzy gala event to be held at Resorts World Sentosa’s East Ballroom. We already know Restaurant Andre will be dropped from the list, since it closed earlier this year for something big in the works, but we’ll only find out how else the winners will be shuffled come event day.
If you’d like to know the results firsthand, you’re welcomed to the award dinner for (gasp!) $595 a person, just like last year. This time, it’ll be a six-course wine pairing dinner (themed “The Past Through Tomorrow”), where Michelin-starred chefs from Singapore and around the world the likes of Bo Innovation’s Alvin Leung and Meta’s Sun Kim, will be offering their interpretation of iconic Singaporean cuisine.
We’re actually anticipating Michelin’s accompanying Bib Gourmand list, a more inclusive selection of restaurants and hawkers offering quality food at value prices, just a little more. The results of that will be out a week before the gala dinner.
