French restaurants are aplenty in this town, but French creperies? Far and few, sadly. Enter week-old Le Comptoir (which has taken over the space of now defunct Archipelago Craft Beer Hub), a new venture by the same folks behind wine bar O Batignolles.
A specialist in crepes and galettes (a type of crepe made with buckwheat flour), the cosy spot offers classic toppings (of course), like emmental cheese and ham ($12) and the obligatory Nutella ($7). On closer look, the menu also features several unconventional (savory) creations, such as a Vietnamese-inspired option (comes with beef, onions, peanuts, carrots and coriander, $15), as well as an Indian one, which has masala chicken, peanuts, chili and fresh cheese ($18).
There’s also a range of booze to go along. What stood out was their cider list that features a couple of uncommon labels, like the Cidre Pays d’Auge AOP Domaine Pierre Huet ($31).
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to sample any of these treats during our impromptu visit (they were closed). Plus, the place still looks like it’s being fixed up so give it a few weeks before dropping by.
Le Comptoir is at 79 Circular Rd., 6534-7645.
Wondering where else to get your crepe fix? Head to these places for some fine choices:
Entre-nous Creperie
You haven’t lived as real foodie until you try their signature Entre-nous crepe ($9.90), which is made with organic wheat flour, crisped to perfection, then drizzled with homemade salted butter caramel.
Taratata Bistrot
Featuring shrimps, mussels, mushrooms and creamy, cheesy Bechamel Mornay sauce, the La Pecheur ($16) never fails to satisy us on a lazy Sunday morning (it’s only available for brunch after all).
The White Rabbit
Their ever-popular Crepes Suzette ($18) comes with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, lots of tangy citrus syrup and is practically drowned in Grand Marnier liquer.
