Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

With our nation’s 54th birthday soon upon us, many international menus here have been given a local spin. This August, celebrate all-things local while enjoying a smattering of Singaporean flavours at some of your favourite food joints. Below are some of our picks.

Burger & Lobster

If you thought the famous London chain was done localising its menu with the Jewel-exclusive Sambal Glazed Lobster, think again. In the lead up to National Day, find the Laska Lobster ($70) at B&L’s Jewel Changi Airport outlet. But unlike the Sambal Glazed Lobster that only serves a brioche toast on the side for casual dippings, the Laska Lobster comes with all your favourite laksa ingredients, including rice noodles, tofu and bean sprouts. Available through Aug 10

Hans Im Gluck
, Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

It’s surprising to see a restaurant that serves authentic German fare introducing a seafood burger, but in-line with Singapore’s National Day, Hans Im Gluck has done just that. The first and only seafood burger on the menu, tuck into the Krabbe Burger ($16). featuring a soft shelled crab sandwiched between soft yet firm burger patties. Meanwhile, meat lovers can try the Beef Rendang Burger ($16) instead, complete with a beef patty topped with caramelised onions, tomatoes, lettuce and of course—an aromatic and flavourful Rendang sauce. Then, wash the burgers down with the Singapore Rose ($8), an obvious nod to Bandung, our favourite childhood drink. Available through Aug 31

Ippudo

, Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

Famed Japanese ramen restaurant chain Ippudo will also be joining in the local festivities, with their offering of The Ultimate Chilli Crab Ramen ($28). Only available at Ippudo Marina Bay Sands and Ippudo Mandarin Gallery, a limited number of 30 bowls will be served daily, so snag a bowl while you can. If you’re worried that the chilli crab flavour might be a little too overpowering, don’t be. The soup base remains a fragrant, tonkatsu broth, with just a scoop of chilli crab sauce added atop brings the umami in the ramen to the next level. Originally made in collaboration with No Signboard Seafood for Singapore Food Festival 2019, the ramen will continue to be served until the end of the National Day weekend. Available through Aug 12

Paradise Teochew

, Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

Trust this Teochew restaurant to put an interesting spin on the Singaporean favourite Chilli Crab dish, with the Steamed Diced Chicken in Chilli Crab Sauce Wrapped in Egg White Crepe ($28). Expect chicken dumplings soaked in a spicy chilli crab broth that’ll satisfy both your craving for spicy food and soup dumplings. And exclusive to their lunch menu is the Crispy Kaya Bun ($6.80), featuring three sizable coconut jam-filled pastries. You’ll even receive 54% off when you order these specific items. Available through Aug 31

Potato Head Singapore

, Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

While Potato Head Singapore could have picked a better name for their Chicken Rice-inspired burger, the Chick In Rice Burger ($19) is, nonetheless, appetising. Find a tender sous vide chicken breast that’s bathed in ginger and garlic layered with a slow-roasted, spiced chicken thigh confit, with spicy chilli sauce, ginger jam, cucumbers and scallions doused in creamy ginger mayo all added in to seal the deal. Available through Aug 9-11 (and also at Three Buns Quayside from Aug 9-12)

Town Restaurant
, Celebrate Singapore’s National Day with these locally-inspired menus

This is one you’ll have to come with an appetite. In celebration of National Day, The Fullerton Hotel will be throwing a large buffet shindig, complete with all your local favourites including immensely flavourful satays by well-loved homegrown brand Chim’s Satays. Look forward to chicken rice stations, an ice kachang kiosk and more, at their Soiree by the River ($59-$85 per head) event. Available Aug 1-11 during dinner

Bonus: Artemis Grill & Sky Lounge

Now here’s a bubble tea beverage we can get with. Artemis Grill & Sky Bar is offering an alcoholic bubble tea cocktail, based with Singapore-made Tanglin Orchid Gin, so it doesn’t get anymore local than this. The SummerSop ($15) features a tangy, soursop flavour as well as tapioca pearls that have been infused with a rose elixir to get that red hue. Extra points for colour coordination with our nation’s flag. Available Aug 1-9
