The prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017, now in its 15th edition, just concluded in Melbourne and it is a big win for Singapore with Restaurant André soaring 18 spots from last year’s ranking to attain the title of being the 14th best restaurant in the world. This also marks the restaurant’s seventh consecutive year in the coveted listing since 2011.
It is the only restaurant from our tiny city-state to make the top 50 (let that sink in for a while), and not only that, is one of only two restaurants from Asia to make the top 15 cut; the other being Thailand’s Gaggan taking the seventh spot. This makes the Bukit Pasoh Road establishment the number two restaurant in Asia while Gaggan retains its crown on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017 lineup.
But there are more wins for Singapore in the broader top 100 list released earlier last week. Popular Australian barbeque joint Burnt Ends on Teck Lim Road was just shy of being in the top 50, claiming the 53rd spot, and French fine-dining restaurant Odette at National Gallery Singapore—opened by celebrity chef Julien Royer after leaving Jaan—managed to make its debut at number 86.
Looking at the global stage, Eleven Madison Park in New York took the number one spot, ousting last year’s winner Osteria Francescana in Italy. Surprisingly not on the list is Copenhagen’s famed Noma (which even has a movie made about it in 2015) as it’s now closed while in the midst of relocating.
