On your next visit to Orchard Road, keep your eyes and appetite peeled for some of the hidden culinary gems at Wheelock Place and if you don’t already know, here’s five dining and drinking spots we’re totally digging.
Bangkok Jam
Nothing like Thai food to whet an appetite, and the ever-vibrant Bangkok Jam (#02-04/05) keeps things fun and tasty, with traditional Thai delicacies treated with a modern twist for diners who seek a contemporary culinary experience. Some hot favorites include its juicy and flavorful Peek Gai Tod (crispy chicken wings marinated in fish sauce and fried with pandanus leaves) and of course their classic take on Tom Yum Soup that will fire up your palate.
Delifrance
The all-time favorite French inspired cafe serves up fresh daily bakes of their signature pastries including Baguette, Feuillete, Viennoserie and not forgetting the buttery and aromatic Croissant. For all you avo-lovers out there, the new All-Day Breakfast at Delifrance (#02-17/17A) is something you’ll never want to miss, featuring two of their latest additions including the Avocado & Honey toast that promises a sweet crunch topped with Almond Granola and the Avocado & Salmon Tartine that is bound to perk up your appetite.
Style by Style Vibes Cafe
Style by Style Vibes Cafe (#02-19) rubs off a hint of nostalgia by offering a sumptuous spread of international and all-time favorite Singaporean dishes like Nasi Lemak, Beef Rendang, Chicken Curry and even Ice Kacang. On the western end of the menu you can also pick up classic Pizzas, Pasta, Sirloin Steak and Braised Lamb Shank. Besides, it is a great spot to enjoy some good ol’ fashioned Nanyang Kopi and Teh over a midday shopping break in town.
The Great Beer Experiment (TGBE)
With their recent move, here’s one all the craft beer aficionados will look forward to—The Great Beer Experiment (#02-01A) has found its new home at Wheelock Place. This local craft beer and cider bottle shop stocks over 150 labels from all over the world. Pick up a craft beer from Australia, Belgium, USA, UK or Denmark—or even a locally brewed Singaporean beer. Plus, TGBE often rolls out beer/stout tasting session available to the public (check out their Facebook page), which is the perfect way to try out their amazing range.
Uya Unagi Restaurant
Ready for a real unagi treat? Uya Unagi Restaurant (#02-15/16) specialises in live unagi and served fresh upon ordering. Prepared in timeless charcoal grilling style and application of tare (no additives!), expect nothing less than experiencing the natural taste of the perfectly grilled unagi—crispy, fluffy and creamy. So we say, have a go at the signature Hitsumabushi set or perhaps dig into their classic fare of rice bowls topped with sashi or rare wagyu beef. The space itself is authentic and welcoming, and the open-concept kitchen means you can see all the unagi grilling happening live. It’s a fresh treat any time of the day.
