Right next door from Jigger & Pony, things are brewing and cooking at Sugarhall, a new grill and rum bar by the same people. This modern American restaurant serves up lots of meats and has a mean cocktail progra, courtesy of Jigger & Pony’s bar manager Aki Eguchi.
Despite the fact that it looks like just about every other cool new restaurant with its wooden interiors, communal hightop tables and exposed light fixtures hanging from ropes, it’s an inviting space that matches the types of dishes coming from the kitchen. Between the simple mains that rely on the char from the grill like whole fish and pork chops, there’s a lot of sharing options going on in the menu. It’s inventive and unapologetic without trying too hard, something we feel is sorely needed in the increasingly elaborate dining scene.
And you know what they say: big slabs of meat require a lot of washing down. Luckily, the bar does a really solid job of pushing out drinks that are categorized into clear and dark spirits and tropical flavors. Each one has a hungry to full slider that helps you pick out a drink based on how much more your tummy can take. Even though that doesn’t deter us from ordering whatever we like, it’s actually a pretty accurate scale. Plus, they make one of the best Negronis we’ve tasted in a while.
