Bubble tea brand Tiger Sugar brings its stripes to Yishun

Seems like the 2017 renovation of Northpoint was that bit of feng shui change Northsiders needed.

Yishun struck gold when Northpoint became Northpoint City; fresh eateries began popping up throughout the complex including fast food chain Big Fish Small Fish, Mexican diner Guzman Y Gomez and even a blessed food street basement-full of stalls and restaurants with the likes of Pizza Maru, Kanshoku Ramen Bar, hot pot buffet Yi Qian Ling Yi Ye and a Teppanyaki outlet that had returned after a prior renovation that removed the stall from the Kopitiam. The newly-added food options almost seemed to make up for the bad reputation that had been going around the Yishun region for years now. Almost.

However, a new bubble tea-related introduction just might finally tilt the scales back into Yishun’s favor. Tiger Sugar ventures into the North with an outlet on the ground floor of Northpoint City this Saturday (May 18), so now Northies don’t have to travel far to queue for a marbled milk tea.

Like many bubble tea spots, this one also comes from Taiwan. Its first outlet in Singapore garnered so much attention that it had customers queuing for over an hour during the store’s inaugural launch. Most of the snaking queue of bbt-enthusiasts are there for the bestseller, the brown sugar and cream mousse blend that comes in three main variations: Brown Sugar Boba Milk with Cream Mousse ($5.30), Brown Sugar Boba with Pearls with Cream Mousse ($5.30) and Brown Sugar Pearl Milk with Cream Mousse ($5.30).

Besides the almost-artistic intricate designs of the striped beverage that will inevitably end up on your Instagram feed, these milk teas are a step up from your regular “Milk tea with pearls” order. Four types of Taiwanese brown sugar make up the caramelised syrup; giving the sweetness a little more dimension. The stripes happen when it comes into contact with creamy, fatty Meiji Milk, creating wisps of caramel that are suspended in the cream. Shake the cup for an even distribution of milk-to-syrup ratio, and suck away. Of course, chewy boba pearls are packed at the bottom, if a satisfying bite is what you crave.

Opening 11am on May 18, kick off yet another long weekend with a celebratory drink (that’s socially acceptable to have before noon). Expect a queue, though, as we predict the Northsiders are pretty thirsty about this.

Tiger Sugar opens May 18 at #01-153, Northpoint City, from 11am-10pm daily. More info here.
