Another widely popular Hong Kong chain is expanding to our shores. Months after congee institution Mui Kee opened its first Southeast Asia outlet at Shaw Centre, Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng (translating directly to “tea restaurant”) Tsui Wah is following the trend and setting up shop here too. Brought in by our own Jumbo Group, the chain’s first Singapore outlet will open its doors in Clarke Quay on Jun 15.
With over 60 outlets in Hong Kong, Macau and China, the chain brand has garnered quite a reputation for itself—particularly for its signature items like Milk Tea and the Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk. At the 140-seater Singapore outpost, look forward to those and a series of curry dishes. No further news on what other items to expect, though the original restaurants boast a full menu of items like egg noodles, fish soup, chicken wings and more. According to representatives, chefs from Tsui Wah Hong Kong have been training staff in Singapore for the past few months, to ensure “Tsui Wah’s authentic culinary culture of classic Hong Kong flavors”.
Even if you’ve never been to Hong Kong, you probably know that a cha chaan teng typically offers a wide and affordable menu (think the pre-existing chains Central or Xin Wang). Tsui Wah in Hong Kong actually comes at a more premium price point that locals aren’t too fond of, so we’re more than intrigued to see how prices will translate here. After its launch, the restaurant will be open 11am to 11pm daily—sadly, not late enough to serve as the next big post-Zouk supper spot.
Tsui Wah Clarke Quay is located at #01-03, 3A River Valley Road, and will open Jun 15 at 1pm.
