For authentic Greek dining (think shared meat and seafood platters, yogurt dip and layered casserole) set in a picturesque venue reminiscent of the Mediterranean, Bakalaki Greek Taverna, found in the hip Tiong Bahru neighborhood, will not disappoint.
Executive Chef Spiros Palaiologos takes pride in staying as close to genuine Greek cuisine as possible, using many products directly imported from Greece, while still catering to the local palate.
For small plates and appetizers meant to go along with its unique and broad selection of Greek wines and beers (the Mythos Lager [$11.90] and Genesis red and whites look promising), go for their Mezedes and Orektika selections like crispy fried squid with lemon ($22.90), homemade fried potatoes topped with graviera cheese ($9.90) and Greek yogurt mixed with cucumber, garlic and extra virgin olive oil ($14.90).
Fuller meals are available too and come under the Kreatika and Psaria Sharas portions of the menu. Our attention gravitates towards the grilled skewers of beef, chicken or lamb served with tomato onion, Greek yogurt and pita bread ($23.90-$25.90). Or if undecided while with a bigger group, the mixed grill platter of meats ($188.90) or seafood ($168.90) can easily satisfy four hungry stomachs.
Before you leave, be sure to take a pretty picture of (or with) the real olive tree, brought over from Greece, nestled smack in the center of the restaurant.
