Beets

The buzz: A recent Dempsey addition, vegetarian restaurant Beets is part of a new line-up of places at 22 Dempsey by the people behind Brazilian grill Carnivore (oh, the irony). The vibe: A laidback spot with simple, modern furnishings and lots of glass which showcase the lush green surrounds beautifully. The chocolate brown and white décor is spruced up with cheery orange blooms that sit on every table. There’s also a private room (as private as you can get with floor-to-ceiling glass that is) which is ideal for a small function. The food: Wholesome, easy-to-love dishes with an international twist. Aside from a comforting leek and potato soup with a poached egg ($10), you’ll also find Asian-inspired items including sambal oelek-spiked butternut squash and tofu salad ($15) and mushroom-black truffle “cheong fun” ($15). They also have a decent selection for vegan folk like a hearty homemade seaweed tofu burger with grilled pumpkin and truffle aioli ($20) and Portobello mushrooms with aubergine caviar and peperonata ($23).The drinks: Healthful juices such as the Sunset Beets ($10)—beetroot with orange, apple and carrot—provide light refreshment, or if you decide a tipple’s in order, martinis ($15) such as white chocolate and more interesting flavors like apple and feijoa (a Brazilian fruit). Why you’ll be back: For simple and well-executed meat-free fare that won’t leave you feeling deprived.
