For eight years this friendly neighborhood bar and grill has been a part of the lively Siglap dining scene, and outlasted many other establishments nearby. Now with a backpackers’ hostel upstairs, Georges is a place where both locals and travelers come for the wide range of beer, hearty meat and seafood grills, mains and solid appetizers that include buffalo wings, topshell and chunky fries. The large alfresco section out front is the most popular, while indoors is the domain of the bar, with high tables and stools and a good live band playing sing-a-long faves. The night we went, we were happy with our food—the beer battered fish and chips were crispy and fresh, and the grilled dory was done just right—but we were less satisfied with the service. We ordered a bottle of white wine—a simple enough request, but one that left our clueless server flapping about. She was trying hard, and was friendly, but ran in and out several times before sorting out our order—and even then we had to ask for the wine to be chilled. We’d come back again, but hope that the staff will be more on top of things by then.
When the weather is good, eating outside can be a truly enjoyable dining experience. These joints with charming open air areas are just the place to dine on breezy evenings.
