Fugu, or pufferfish and dishes made from it, is coming to Singapore in a big way with Guenpin Fugu, the largest fugu restaurant chain in Japan, setting up shop here. It boasts a whooping 96 outlets in Japan and has been around for 30 years. Their first overseas outlet in Singapore is a cozy and intimate 32-seater restaurant.
They specialize in torafugu and snow crab cuisines. Torafugu is the most premium grade of fugu available in the market and at Guenpin, it is prepared in a variety of ways such as thin sliced sashimi ($28), thick sliced sashimi ($32), sushi, grilled ($48), hotpot ($55) or cooked with porridge. Expect similar treatments to the snow crab as well. Luxurious lunch sets are going at $38 that come with tiger pufferfish, deep fried pufferfish or sashimi. The sets all come with rice, soup, a few sides and a scoop of ice-cream.
Sake is served here as well. Classic options include Dassai Junmai Daiginjou 50 ($16-28), Harugasumi Junmai ($118) and Kotsuzumi Rojo Hana Ari Junmai Daiginjo ($248). For the more adventurous, pick the more unusual choices like fin sake ($25) and tsugi sake ($15); a cup of heated sake with grilled fish fins.
