The first Halal Izakaya in Singapore, Hararu Izakaya fits right in in the Muslim hub of the Arab quarter. Specializing in Japanese grilled cuisine using traditional charcoal grills, the Muslim-owned Japanese Izakaya aims to deliver authentic eats that still maintain the standards of a Halal establishment.
Amongst artwork of Japanese landscape and icons—think Kyoto alleys, Mount Fuji—choose from a diverse menu of Japanese dishes. There’s the ever-popular kushiyaki (grilled skewers), available in wagyu beef, quail egg and chicken thigh; or heartier options like the Saba Shio Yaki and Unagi Kabayaki—grilled mackerel and grilled eel respectively. Hararu Izakaya’s signature dish, however, is Gyu Nitsuku, stewed tender beef ribs cooked for eight hours so they melt in your mouth. For a homier experience, have your meal on the second floor of the double-storey establishment, which is kitted out in tatami seating for a quirky, oriental touch.
In place of an alcohol menu, a signature line of non-alcoholic mocktails are on offer to round up the meal. Try the Japanese Twisted Chendol for a beverage spin on the local dessert, or the more intriguing The Matcha Egg—an icy blend of green tea, milk and egg white.
