Located at the ground level of the new Tanjong Pagar Centre building, right outside the MRT station and smack in the middle of the CBD bustle, this casual donburi joint specializing in bluefish tuna—hence the name of the establishment—draws steady queues for both lunch and dinner.
What’s so special about it? Well, only the best premium bluefin tuna is served here and at a very reasonable price. The restaurant—started by the same people who do Maguro Donya at Suntec’s Eat at Seven—keeps prices competitive because they import their seafood twice a week directly from the trawlers at Misaki Port in Kanagawa prefecture, and that too at a temperature of -60 degrees Celsius to help retain the freshness.
Kuro Maguro serves over a dozen variations of donburi, and while cuts of tuna are no doubt the highlight here, attention is paid to all aspects of the experience: even the Japanese rice, topped with nori flakes, is very tasty, fluffy and flavorful, due in part to the house-recipe vinegar they use.
