We decided to check out how the original La Forketta is doing, and assess whether it’s still delivering the goods. This family-friendly restaurant was doing pretty well for a weekday lunch when we were there, as it’s popular with the office and family crowd from around the vicinity. It also helps that the place boasts a rustic charm (the wooden tables and chairs are exactly those that you will find at a neighborhood restaurant), and the service is friendly. But overall, when we went to visit, the food was hit and miss. We settled for the rather affordable set lunch, where we got to pick a starter, main and dessert each—its competitive price is probably the main draw. (Individual starters, mains and desserts.) Our mackerel salad was a delight—thick slices of mackerel were nicely drenched with generous olive oil, but our beef carpaccio was only so-so, as the beef was a tad too chewy and lacked flavor. Same with our mains—we absolutely loved our beef scallopina, as the meat was tender and juicy, served with a generous serving of salads; but our spaghetti carbonara was predictable, ordinary and could have done with more bacon bits. Ditto our desserts: While our tiramisu was scrumptious, our chocolate cake was utterly lackluster—it came lukewarm, and could have done with more chocolate sauce. We were also not impressed with the fact that we were charged an additional for a bread basket, even if the selection was good, and another for mineral water. Come here for a quick lunch if you’re around the area, but it’s probably not really worth making a trip for.
