This Chinese institution has had several gourmet accolades under its belt. The restaurant isn’t large, has huge Chinese paintings and front doors that look like they came from the Forbidden City. We had an early dinner, and the staff kept topping up our tea. But that was the only that they did enthusiastically; otherwise the service was listless.
The solid drunken chicken appetizer was subtly laced with wine and there were loads of chicken strips. The staff seemed to warm up later, and carved and wrapped up our barbequed Peking duck deftly. The duck meat could be more tender, but was still good. The duck skin, served with some chili dip, celery and wrapped up in a dumpling-like skin, was fabulous. The abalone in the braised sliced abalone with garden greens had a great texture and rich gravy, and the refreshing double boiled hashima with Fuji apple cleared our palate nicely.
We had a great meal here, but more sincere and smiley service would have made it better.
