With its lovely location overlooking the East Coast Parkway, The Mango Tree has always been a good spot for eating consistently yummy mid-range Indian fare with water views. For somewhere you can pop into for a casual meal but that’s still nice enough to get dressed up for, The Mango Tree achieves the right balance. If you are there for an early dinner on a weekend, be prepared for the cycling trails outside the restaurant to be packed with intrepid rollerbladers, cyclists and picnicking families, complete with dogs, crowds and a periodically noisy rollerblade store next door. There are a few alfresco tables along with the dining inside, which is definitely quieter and more formal. We like the menu which is more interesting than the usual fare—dishes like Allepey fish curry, adhraki panja or lamb cutlets, and the Keralan vegetable dish make for a more varied selection than the usual butter chicken. Complete with delicious breads such as cheese naan and the unusual appam, this is Indian coastal food definitely worth tucking into. For good Indian food that doesn’t cost a bomb but isn’t in Little India, The Mango Tree gets our recommendation.
