Tapping into the rice and grain bowls trend, The Populus Coffee & Food Co. aims to serve more creative fusion plates that depart from the usual eggs benedict and waffles combo. Opened in November 2015 by the group behind Department of Caffeine and 2degrees North Coffee Co., the cafe has recently launched new weekday and weekend menus.
Influenced by their trips to Melboune, New Zealand and London, owners Andrew Lek and Kang Yi Yang have whipped up a wide selection of dishes ranging from brunch items like buckwheat pancakes with berry compote, passionfruit curd and maple syrup ($20.50) and lunch options such as pulled pork grain bowl ($19.50). For dinner, try Japanese-inspired donburis like the Populus chicken rice doburi ($18.50) or opt for the truffled wagyu beef ($21.50) instead. The cafe also serves interesting takes on local cuisine, which can be found in dishes like the Heirloom rendang rice bowl ($20), and a selection of soft serve ice cream sundaes.
