For one of Singapore’s few American style delis, the long-standing Seah Street Deli is holding its own well. It has polished its formula: A classic American setting with black-and-white floor tiles, marble-top tables and wooden chairs, and a jukebox, with a menu of sandwiches, burgers, salads, milkshakes and floats, and more. On top of this lengthy list of staples, there are daily specials that will leave you torn between what to order. Friendly wait staff in cheesy but cute uniforms work the floor like clockwork, and the service is prompt and well rehearsed. We had their signature items—the all American burger, a Reuben, a root beer float and a chocolate milkshake. The food was hearty, rich and delicious, with the thick shake and juicy pastrami Rueben standing out. While the portions are not quite as humongous as you would get in the US they are certainly generous by our standards. The main difference between this restaurant and delis in the US is that the latter are commonplace whereas Seah Street Deli is in Singapore’s most established five star hotel—but its all-American style, wide ranging menu and mid-range prices make it somewhere you can dine regularly with no problem.
