A Good Cause
I wonder about the state of things here sometimes. While we’re dealing with mundane, existential problems like “What do I wear to work?” the people in Japan are coping with the tsunami and earthquake aftermath. Seriously people, we need some real problems. Which is why I’m always heartened to see efforts to raise money for the unfortunate no matter what form they take, even if it’s a mildly superficial, fashion-related one. A bunch of local designers and labels with be pulling together their past seasons’ collections and samples for a one-off three-day sale on Mar 25-27, 10:30am-9:30pm (that’s this weekend, my sweeties) at 2/F, Parco next NEXT, Parco Millenia Walk, 6883-1122. The event is free of charge and expect huge markdowns on pieces by designers Keith Png, Nicholas Wong and Larry Lam. What makes it truly worthy is the fact that all proceeds from the sale will go to the local wing of the Japan disaster society, with all leftover stocks donated to the Red Cross Society. Thumbs up for these stylish samaritans.
A for Effort
Certainly enough to perk up any midweek blues, the adidas Sport StyleDay event held last Tuesday outside Ngee Ann City was quite the hoot. Never mind that the waiting area was filled with poseurs downing Champers; the mood inside was upbeat and fun. Non-models such as MTV VJ Holly Grabarek and Butter Factory owners Bobby and Ritz got to do their thing as they outshone the more predictable models, garbed in adidas clothes spanning SLVR, Originals, Porsche and Y-3 ranges. The coup of the show? Hip hop and soul DJ Ko Flow and beat-boxer Dharni who took to the floor with their seamless mashup tunes; which is more than we can say about the overall show, which was disjointed but nonetheless entertaining.
Shopping Spree
Woo hoo! The Spring/Summer collections for Adam Kimmel, Haider Ackermann and Rodarte have finally arrived at Club 21b (#01-07 Forum The Shopping Mall, 583 Orchard Rd., 6304-1459) and about time too. I was harping on in previous columns about their late arrival—so if you’re looking for some reliable and less commercial high fashion ready-to-wear pieces, head down already. Alternatively, indie boutique ActuallyActually (#02-01, 16 Purvis St., 6336-7002) has just released the latest shoes from designer Damir Doma’s highly sought-after Silent collection—so be sure to check those out too.
