6 fun markets to check out in April

As we slowly ease into April, shake off the madness of March and take it easy with six casual markets this month. Word of warning: if you fancy yourself a collector of fine antiques, you’ll want to start saving up.

Easter Flea Market (Apr 1)

The Chinese Swimming Club is holding a one-day Easter affair for bunnies everywhere. The flea market will feature vendors selling vintage items, as well as second-hand clothing and goods, so you’ll be sure to pick up a few steals there. Want to get handsy with eggs? Arts and crafts workshops will be available for you to make trinkets like Washi Easter Eggs too.

Where: Chinese Swimming Club, 21/34 Amber Road

9th Organic-Friendly Farmers Market (Apr 7)

Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore is hosting a special “Giving Back” edition of their annual farmers’ market. Pick up artisanal produce and organic-friendly products from brands like Frank Food Company; or sign up for an urban farming workshop, where urban farmer Alexius Yeo will enlighten on what plants in Singapore can actually be eaten. They’re even bringing in live music for your shopping pleasure.

The Vintage Fair: A Walk In The Park (Apr 7-8)

Vintage fanatics, this one’s for you. For the fourth year, local retro home decor store Journey East is organizing their much anticipated Vintage Fair weekend popup—and teaming up with some of the island’s best vintage community to do so. Nostalgia is key at the event, so look forward to brands like By My Old School, a family-run vintage boutique with one-off knickknacks from the ‘60s and beyond; and Five Stones Vintage, which sells handpicked vintage clothing and accessories from the 1930s to 1980s.

For the true collectors, you’ll be pleased to see stores like Eelloo—which rescues and restores vintage Etienne Aigner from all over the world)—and Lemon Kitscharms, purveyors of vintage costume jewellery from the ‘20s to ‘80s from designers like Sarah Coventry and Avon. Be sure to hit up the ATM before you go, as everything is cash-only.

Where: Journey East, #03-02, Tan Boon Liat Building

Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market (Apr 13)

A new month calls for a new Katong Square market, which, with its vinyl records and vintage goods, touts itself as Singapore’s only true blue vintage flea market. Resident booths include familiar names like The Retro Factory, Memory Lane and The Great Vinyl Exchange; this month’s market will even feature Victorian era lockets, energy and healing crystals and Art Deco finds.

Where: Katong Square

NAFA Arts Festival (Apr 13-Jun 3)

The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts turns 80 this year, and to celebrate, they’re throwing an eight-week arts festival to showcase the school’s diverse talents. As part of the festival, a series of festival markets will take place each weekend, featuring craft-makers and jewellers, local fashion labels, original artworks and vintage collectibles. You can even be part of the excitement and book a booth here.

Where: NAFA, 80 Bencoolen Street

The trusty Farmers Market at Loewen Gardens returns with a good mix of organic vegetables, wine, olive oil and fresh honey on sale. Plus—the promise of craft beer at this month’s market has our interest piqued.
