Zalora designer Johanna Lau on local fashion faux-pas

There are lots of goings on at Zalora, with the launch of their own label and the upcoming opening of their brick-and-mortar store. We chatted to Johanna Lau, Regional Assistant Menswear Designer, about creating a label, fashion faux-pas and the new hot trends.

What are your thoughts on the Singaporean sense of fashion?

We may have gotten off to a slow start with wearing flip flops all day, everyday, but I feel that Singaporeans are paying more and more attention to the way they look, and are starting to have a greater awareness and appreciation of fashion brands and trends. We are definitely seeing more people on the streets dressing up and embracing individuality!

What are the worst fashion faux-pas that you’ve seen on the streets?

Crocs, soccer jerseys, and down-to-there v neck tees!

What were the inspirations behind the new line?

For the launch of the Zalora label, we wanted to create a look that was fresh, clean and very wearable. We aim to create looks for the man that has individuality and confidence, and is not afraid to mix and match items to create a signature style of his own. We use classic silhouettes for our pieces, but our details add a unique touch.

What has been the most challenging part of creating the label?

The most challenging part would be finding the right balance between creating pieces that are unique, yet commercial enough for the customer to be receptive to. We have to constantly keep in mind who the Zalora man is, and to ensure that our brand direction is clear and strong.

How is it different designing menswear as a woman?

Its definitely different in the sense where when I was designing womenswear, it was easier to understand what women would like and appreciate. With menswear, It is harder to visualize or predict if the design with be well received. Men tend to be more selective and brand loyal, and their buying patterns are different too. Fit and fabrics are also key. Its a challenge, but it has been very interesting and rewarding at the same time.

What advice would you give to other aspiring fashion designers?

Find your individual style and keep to it! Be original and true to yourself always. Envision where you want to be in the future and don’t stop until you get there!

What are the hot new trends for the next few months?

Expect Japanese inspired prints, polished denim jackets, and sailor inspired stripes and details.

What are the key wardrobe items for women and men to invest in?

For both men and women, a classic crisp white shirt is definitely key! Not forgetting a well fitted black jacket or blazer to throw over a day outfit to make it suitable for night.
