10 markets in May that’d be a mistake to miss

Mayday; May is full of markets and it’s terrible for all our wallets. But if you’re down for some retail therapy this month, the good news is you’ll be spoilt for choice—especially with the long-awaited Artbox Singapore finally happening, as well as the annual cult favorite thrift event by New2U.

 

ONE KM Mall Pop up Lifestyle Market (May 4-6)

The weekend lifestyle market over at ONE KM Mall in Tanjong Pagar has been running since March, but the May edition is a special Pre-Hari Raya festive market. Look forward to stall owners selling organic vegetables and foods, clothing, handmade accessories, gadgets and gifts—as well as modest wear and Muslim fashion this month.

DesignArt Festa (May 4-6)

Underestimating design that’s born right here in Singapore is the last thing you should do, especially when there are numerous innovative designers making waves in the fields of anything from fashion to homewares and souvenirs. Curated by Supermama, this market will see bowls, cups, plant pots and vases from ceramics studio Weekender Work, Peranakan cuisine from Shermay’s Singapore Fine Food, knick knacks from Supermama’s own label Souvenirs from Singapore and so much more.

Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market May 2018 (May 11)

A new month calls for a new Katong Square market, which, with its vinyl records and vintage goods, touts itself as Singapore’s only true blue vintage flea market. Resident booths include familiar names like The Retro Factory, Memory Lane and The Great Vinyl Exchange—where you can pick up anything from retro haute couture to Art Deco pieces. This month, shop alongside live entertainment by local band Street Crickets, the market’s line-up of old-school DJs, and a magician.

Andes Festival Market at Tanjong Pagar Centre (May 11-17)

If you’re in the area, pop by Tanjong Pagar Centre to pick up hand-sewn pouches, accessories and other trinkets from local handcraft entrepreneur Ohhgranny.

Bazaar by Emperor’s Attic (May 16)

Collectors will be pleased to know that antique store Emperor’s Attic (formerly called FairPrice Antique) is holding one of their regular bazaars this May. Enjoy wine and nibbles while you peruse quality Chinese antique, vintage and new furniture, ceramics, porcelain, stone statues, art and more—Emperor’s Attic sources from a small number of suppliers in Northern China, so you know it’s only the good stuff.

New2U Bazaar (May 19)

Singapore’s thrift scene might seem desolate to most, but one star has consistently shone above the rest—New2U Thrift Shop, a subsidiary under the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations; and they’re back with their annual bazaar. The thrifting madness gets multiplied tenfold, with the entire space opening up from its usual one-room affair to display heaps of pre-loved clothes, designer bags and more on sale. Doors open at 10am, and don’t underestimate the local community of thrift-seekers.

Sunday Social Market (May 20)

Music, fashion and food come together at the Camp Kilo Charcoal Club regular event. Shop fashion accessories, crafts and interior decor, taste from artisanal bakers and indulge in Camp Kilo’s hearty roasts while the DJs spin house music to get you in the spending mood.

Artbox Singapore 2018 (May 25-27, Jun 1-3)

Rejoice or recoil—Bangkok’s legendary Artbox Singapore is finally back, with a self-proclaimed line-up that’s “three times bigger than last year”. Head down to the Bayfront event space to shop the 400 regional vendors selling everything from food to trinkets to Instagrammable moments. We can’t promise that crowd control will be any better than last year, but 400 booths at the island’s largest creative market does sound enticing.

The Ramadan Flea (May 25-Jun 14)

TGIF Bazaars returns to OneKM Mall for their third Ramadan Flea, where you’ll be able to splurge on accessories, apparels, essential oils, home decor items, antiques and collectibles, and of course, food.

Goodman Green Green Market (May 26)

For one day only, Goodman Arts Centre is turning into a hub of art and activity for the annual Goodman Open House. Check out the free exhibitions, open studios and workshops; or stop by the in-event market with 30 eco-friendly vendors hawking locally grown produce, reusable products and more.
