WATCH: Another Japanese retail brand is opening its first Southeast Asia flagship store in Singapore

With the opening of Uniqlo’s massive three-floor Southeast Asia flagship last Sept and Lumine’s first outpost outside of Japan at Clarke Quay Central later this year, it’s safe to say that the love between Japan and Singapore is pretty mutual. Now, masters of all things minimal, Muji, will be opening its first Southeast Asia flagship store in Plaza Singapura on Jul 21.

Spanning across 1,896 sq m, the new store will be the largest outlet here, which translates to them having more space to include new concepts adapted from their HQ. While it still can’t beat the OG stores in Japan in terms of size and product range, the Plaza Singapura outlet will act as a community-centric space for patrons from various walks of life to explore art and design ideas. As Muji puts it, it will be “a window to the world, while keeping the basic concept” of the brand.

To do this, they’ve engaged a notable Tokyo-based design company to work on the store’s facade. They’ve used layers and panels of wood for most elements on the store, including the ceiling, to create a comfortable, homely feel for patrons. There’s also a complex wall display made up of old books stacked together.

Idee

Much like the little corner on the top floor of Uniqlo’s flagship, Muji will also introduce the Open Muji Concept that’ll be reserved for activities such as creative workshops, as well as to host exhibitions, galleries and talks.

Design and space aside, Muji Plaza Singapura will be the only store where you can find products from series’ like Found Muji, a line of products made using materials and techniques found across the world without compromising on the brand’s ethos of functionality and minimal form; Idee, an interior brand that Muji has collaborated with because of their shared philosophy of minimalism; Muji Labo, an apparel line that has a different take on basics; and many others. The store will also house Singapore’s third Cafe&Meal Muji.

Muji Plaza Singapura will open to the public on Jul 21 and is located at #01-10 to 17 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Rd. They will operate daily from 10am-10pm.
