Timbuk2

The buzz: American outdoor accessories specialist Timbuk2, the label that pioneered built-to-order messenger bags, opens a standalone store with a custom bag builder—the first outside the US.

The vibe: Sleek and unfussy, the 280 sq. ft. space pays tribute to the brand’s bike heritage with larger-than-life white gear pieces decorating the interiors. We’ll admit it’s cramped, but the store compensates with more than 100 styles of bags and accessories (that’s 75% of Timbuk2’s entire collection) fighting for your attention.

The goods: There are backpacks (the Aviator wheeled piece is especially handy, $199 upwards), small accessories like laptop sleeves ($65 upwards), totes ($135 upwards) and, of course, the ubiquitous messenger bag to satisfy all types of globetrotters and outdoor enthusiasts. But the highlight is the in-store customization station, where you can go design your own carryalls with different fabrics textures, patterns and colorways ($185 upwards). Once an order is placed, your custom-built bag will be produced in Timbuk2’s factory in San Francisco and can be collected in just two weeks.

Why you’ll be back: If you don’t want to be caught with the same bag as someone else, here’s your answer (Timbuk2 reportedly produces more than 30,000 custom bags each year and only nine have the exact same design). Plus, the thoughtful, practical designs are made to last a lifetime.
